15 Steps to Setting Up a Blog

Setting up a blog may seem a bit challengening for first time users.  However, based on the facts that…

  1.  Google likes Blogs
  2.  Google is going to be changing algorithms to target ‘content farming’ web sites. (Read more about this upcoming change at this link  )  . . .

I can say our future business direction will be concentrating on blogs.

Our New Blogs

We’ve put two blogs up last week – one on Breast Forms  and one on Antiques (both using the same theme – you’ll read more about this later.)

While we’ve covered the basics about blog ‘how-to’s’, we thought it might be interesting to take you through the steps we follow – start to finish – for getting a blog up and running. We’ll not be covering any in depth content associated with each step, but will provide links to posts should you want to read more.

Note: All steps shown are based on having your own domain name registered and having a stand-along hosting provider like Host Gator (use of cPanel).   Let’s get started.

Setting Up a Blog  Step-by-Step

1.   Confirm Domain Name Servers are set to the hosting address (Read More)

2.   Log-in to the cPanel and from ‘Software/Services’ open ‘Fantastico Delux’

3.   From menu select ‘WordPress’ (WP) (Opens new page)

4.   Select ‘New Installation’ and follow the prompts to install WordPress.

Note: If you have more than 1 domain in your hosting account, be sure you select the correct domain for the WP installation.

5.   Assign ‘Log-in/User Name’ and ‘Password’. (Print out the page with this information for your records.)

6.   Click on the link provided to access the WordPress Dashboard; Bookmark this site.

7.   Return to the previous page and scroll down. Input your email address in the designated box (to have this information emailed to you);  submit.

8.   Log-in to your WP Dashboard; if you see a message to upgrade your version of WP do so now. (Select automatic installation.)

9.  Change the theme if you do not plan on using the default WP theme. This will require you to install and activate the new theme. (Our favorite theme is Atahualpa by BytesForAll. With over 200 theme options we can configure and get any look we want. And yes, it’s free.)

Note:  To change themes frm the Dashboard go to Appearance > Themes > Install Themes (From here you can search for, select and install a new theme)

10. Configure all the general WP Settings for your theme.  (Read More)

Note:  Don’t forget to change the ‘Privacy’ setting to allow access by the Search Engines – unless you want a private blog.

11.   Get Akismet Key (Read More)

Note:  If you have multiple domains, you will have to have a unique email address to get a new Akismet Key for each blog.

12.   Install and activate plug-ins (The plug-ins below are the standard ones we use.)

  • Akismet
  • AddToAny: Share/Bookmark/Email Button (Configure Settings)
  • All in One SEO by Michael Torbert (Configure Settings, Not sure if it is still free)
  • Dagon Design Sitemap Generator by Dagon Design
  • Google XML Sitemaps by Arne Brachhold (Configure Settings – Read More)

13.   Create a WP Page for the XML site map.  (Read More)

14.   Install widgets as needed.  (Read More)

15.   You’re ready to start posting!

Technorati is an Internet search engine for searching blogs.  Similar to submitting websites to the search engines, you will need to claim your blog.

To do this you will need to have both a Google  account  (RSS feed setup through Feedburner account) and a Technorati account. Have all accounts registered before attempting to claim your blog with Technorati. Once you are ready to claim your blog, log in to your Technorati account, go to the ‘My Account’  link and follow the prompts for ‘claiming a blog’.
